Having formulated a clear vision for the sustainable coffee solution, the ideation phase starts with brainstorming. The ideas are evaluated and elaborated further starting with figuring out the mechanical working principles. Lastly the exterior appearance is designed, leading into a final concept.

Ideas to concept

Brainstorming

In the brainstorming phase, all types of ideas are come up with to not restrict creativity and allowing to find the best solution. After having done that, the ideas are critically examined to find the pros and cons of each of them and seeing which should be worked out further. In the end the ideas can be categorised into four groups.

Firstly, pods, that have the highest quality guarantee, are comfortable and familiar to the users as they are the market standard now. However they come with many sustainability concerns and are very competitive. Improvements could be made in the material of the pod as standard pods are made from plastic or aluminium. Utilising a biodegradable material would drastically increase the sustainability of the coffee pods. Therefore, if the group decides to with this idea, great emphasis should be on material research for the pods.

Secondly, refillable pods are considered, where the user needs to fill up a compartment with coffee each time after using. This idea has the benefits of being more cost-effective, more customizable as the coffee blend can be chosen and switched up easily and it is more sustainable as pods. There is also more potential for a fresher cup of coffee compared to pre-packaged pods. However, it is way less convenient, being more time-consuming and messy. It is also hard to master the process of filling the pods correctly, leading to variations in quality.

Thirdly, half- or quarter-pods are ideated upon, which allow for less material usage, however they come with risks, being completely new to the market. In this category an idea of a coffee wrapped in soluble plastic is found.

Lastly, the no pod category is discovered. Out of all the previous ones this has the potential of being most sustainable, yet still maintaining the user-friendliness. However, it would be a hard journey as many different aspects needs to be taken into consideration. The biggest of them holding together the coffee as single-portions without using material like pods do. Although finding a suitable material will be challenging, the team decides to continue with a no pod solution, taking on the mentality of Nespresso: pushing boundaries  and delivering extraordinary.
