In order to design a product that creates value, a crucial step known as the analysis phase is set up. During that, a plan is set up to gather data, which is then carefully studied to uncover important insights. Before diving in, a clear problem statement is formulated: design a new mass-producible Nespresso coffee machine, that uses a single-portion system, which is more sustainable than industry standards. The statement gives a clear base to what information needs to be seeked.

Analysis

Design language

The products of Nespresso have a similar design to create brand recognition and to stand out from their competition. In order to design to fit the brand portfolio, a design language analysis is conducted.

The full analysis can be seen in appendix ‘’Design language analysis.’’

Form

Nespresso products tend to be made up of geometrical shapes, that are blended together with rounded edges. The shape language is usually symmetrical, especially from the front view, but incorporated features make it sometimes asymmetric. Mainly straight or curved lines, rarely diagonal on limited editions.

Details

The details of Nespresso products are kept simple and minimal involving slight texture and material changes. Sometimes certain patterns arise from texture, but in general a clean and simple way is taken. The logo is added as a small detail blending together with the product. However, there is still strong attention to detail.

Colour

Mainly different silvers / greys are combined with black or white. A few models are available in more colours, like red, light green, dark blue, orange. Pods come in a variety of colours, that are with a metallic finish.

Materials

The machine’s body is made up of a plastic or metal, most cases a combination of them. Water tank is made of see-through plastic, which makes it easy to check the cleanness. The logo and smaller details are also mostly metal.
